Michael Kenna Style

Emulating the style of Michael Kenna.

UK born photographer Michael Kenna images are instantly recognisable, even if you do not know who he is. He is only a few years older than me, but as always, I didn't know about him, just some of his early work in magazines.

It's worth taking the time to look at his work, it isn't just long exposure water and trees.

His technique seems to involve a good amount of research and careful observation, then choosing the lens and exposure time to achive the result. This may be a very long exposure, or selecting just part of the scene.

As far as I can see, his work is always monochrome, printed 8" x 8" (20 x 20 cm) as he uses a Hasselblad V series camera.

So far I haven't had the chance to take a long exposure shot, generally as the locations are way more busy in Spain than his locations, so tripod work can be tricky. But this will change soon.
